Buffalo Behavioral Medicine is currently recruiting volunteers to participate in the following ongoing research studies:
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of food and activity preferences on weight gain in 6-9 year olds over a 3 year time period.
Children ages 6-9 years old and their parent/legal guardian.
Participants and parents will be reimbursed $240 for completion of the study.
The study involves three visits to the University at Buffalo South Campus, lasting 60-90 minutes, one home visit lasting about 90 minutes and one lab visit per year for two years.

Baby Music and Play Experience Study
The overall purpose of this study is to better understand how motivated infants are for food. The results of this study should help to further our understanding of how individuals relate to food and how the environment can change this behavior.
Infants that are between the ages of 9 and 15 months at the start of the assessment periods (January 2017, June 2017, March 2018, and August 2018)
If eligible, participants will be compensated $400 at the end of the intervention. If ineligible, participants will be reimbursed for their time.
The baby and a caregiver will attend three screening appointments to determine eligibility. If eligible, the caregiver and baby will be randomized to the Music Together class or play date group, and will be required to attend 37 weekly 45 min sessions. In addition, a caregiver and the baby will be asked to attend laboratory sessions at 3, 6, and 12 months of the first year of the study. After the first year, a caregiver and the baby will attend one Music Together class or Play Date session every month, with a laboratory visit at the end of the year.

Board Game Study
Dr. Anzman-Frasca and colleagues are engaged in the development and testing of a board game designed to promote positive behaviors among 3-to-5-year-old children.
Families can receive up to $100 in gift cards for participating. Please call or email using the contact information below for further information about eligibility and enrollment.
Three-to-five-year-old children visit our laboratory for up to five sessions. They play a board game with 1-2 members of our team and up to 1 other child and play a Waiting Game with a small amount of marshmallows or chocolate.

The purpose of InstaThought: The Better Together Study is to see how training positive thinking affects decision making, healthy eating, and weight loss in parents and children. We are looking for parents and children between the ages of 8-12 (who are interested in healthy eating and weight loss) to participate in the program. Participants will attend up to 10 appointments over the course of up to 12 weeks and will learn about our Traffic Light eating plan and how to use positive thinking to make healthy choices.

PLAN with families
PLAN program encourages healthy eating habits and promotes healthy lifestyle changes for families. Families will have an opportunity to learn fun ways to eat healthier and get active. The program is available in pediatric practices located in the Buffalo, Rochester, St. Louis, and Columbus areas.
Overweight 6-12 year old children and their parent/legal guardian.
Parents and children attend varying weekly, bi-weekly and monthly sessions for 2 years.

Pregnancy and Smoking Cessation Study
Dr. Xiaozhong Wen and his Maternal and Child Health Research Program in the Division of Behavioral Medicine at the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences are currently enrolling pregnant women for a clinical program on smoking and pregnancy.
The program’s aim is to see whether a specific behavioral intervention program can help quit smoking during pregnancy. The program will use counseling, feedback, and other evidence-based strategies to change smoking behaviors. It is very safe without use of any medications or devices. The program will last from early pregnancy until 1 year after delivery.
Participants will receive FREE smoking cessation service, and be compensated up to $265 for time and transportation. Compensation and incentives will be distributed right after each patient visit.
Currently pregnant women who are:
- Less than 20 weeks pregnant
- Between the ages of 18 – 39 years old
- Smoking 1 or more cigarettes per day
- Willing to try to quit smoking.

The purpose of the research is to examine decision making in adults with prediabetes.
We will recruit adults at risk for Type 2 diabetes. Participants must have been diagnosed with either high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol and also must have access to an electronic device with wireless capabilities.
Participants will be reimbursed up to $180 for their participation in the study.
Participants will complete 4 sessions, lasting approximately 60-90 minutes. Participants will complete some questionnaires, play some computer games, use electronic devices (e.g., computers, smartphones) and complete an fMRI scan.

The Supermarket Selections Study
The Supermarket Selections Study is currently looking for parents of children between the ages of 2 and 15 who are interested in buying healthier foods for their family.
Parents who have at least one child between the ages of 2-15 years.
If you qualify, you will be paid $25 in cash for your time. Participants will also have a 1-in-10 chance to receive a $100.00 Wegmans gift card.
